Microsoft's Xbox 360 vs the Sony's Playstation 3

Microsoft's Xbox 360 vs the Sony's Playstation 3
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mark_Robbins]Mark Robbins

Microsoft has tried to catch up with some of the titans of the gaming world,
such as Sony with the release of the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 offers many
new features that players will love:

Free limited subscription to online gaming – This allows players who have
not been participating in online gaming a chance to see what is available at no
charge.
All Xbox 360s come with Live-aware – This means you can get a friend invite
or see who is online and what they are playing from your Xbox 360. The
button in the middle of the controller makes all this very easy.
It offers great media features including listening to music while you play
games, the ability to create custom playlists and your own custom soundtracks,
the ability to rip songs from original CDs to your Xbox 360 and stream music
from your MP3 player to your Xbox 360. You can also create slideshows of
photos to share with friends and family.
Xbox 360 has a wireless controller. No more tripping over the wires,
although it can support two wired controllers through USB ports in the
front.
The game console is not only great for gamers, but developers as well.
It is a powerful machine with an unprecedented amount of RAM – a feature added
on the request of developers.
But, Xbox 360 still has some problems that need to be worked out:

Their Japanese third party support is lacking – While some Japanese
developers offer software for the Xbox, it is small in number when compared to
what the same developers offer for Playstation.
While the controller is wireless, it eats batteries rather quickly.
Standard alkaline batteries only last about thirty hours, so if you buy Xbox
360, invest in rechargeable batteries to save yourself some money in the
end.
When they were set up in WalMart stores before days before the launch, many
suffered what is known as the Xbox “360 screen of death,” an error screen.
The Xbox 360 had also had some problems with overheating.
Some report the Xbox 360 system as being very noisy when playing an Xbox 360
disc.
Many people are eagerly awaiting the release of Playstation 3, which may
occur as soon as November of this year. It has been said that the
Playstation 3 has an outward feel (which allows it to stand vertically or
horizontally on its own), as opposed to the Xbox 360’s inward feel. It is
a much larger console than the Playstation 2 and closer to the original size of
the Xbox. Game discs slide into the console like CDs slide into a car
player.
Here are a few attractive features of the Playstation 3:

It is always on, so you can access your Playstation 3 from anywhere as long
as you have an Internet connection.
With a Playstation Portable, you can connect to your Playstation 3 and
transfer media such as music and movies.
The Playstation 3 appears to be much more powerful than that Xbox 360,
Ninetindo Revolution, and Playstation 2. Initial reports say it will be
twice as fast as the Xbox 360.
Developers and publishers of over 230 games have announced titles for
Playstation 3 games.
Here are a few reported cons and problems with the Playstation 360:

Comes with only 256 MB, less than the 512 MB the Xbox 360 will come
with.
Their Playstation Network Platform (the online service) is still in
development and may not be ready by the time Playstation 3 is released.
The launch of the Playstation 3 has already been delayed due to disk
problems.
Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are incredible gaming consoles. It
seems that although the Xbox 360 came out first, the best bet is still the
Playstation 3. The strongest point of the Xbox 360 is its online
functionality, but Sony may be working on something similar to Xbox Live right
now. However, Microsoft is closing the gap with Xbox 360 and probably will
eventually catch up with Sony in gaming consoles. For some users, it may
come down to something as simple as which one is more compatible with the games
they already own.

Xbox 360 Red Lights - Why You Can't Just Hope Your Xbox 360 Red Lights Just Go Away!

Xbox 360 Red Lights - Why You Can't Just Hope Your Xbox 360 Red Lights Just Go Away!
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Anthony_Uccello]Anthony Uccello

Sadly, if you have Xbox 360 red lights then you will have to fix your Xbox 360 to make the red ring of death go away. But "can I fix my Xbox 360 myself?" you ask...well, the short answer is yes, and the long answer is yes, and you can do it from home with common house hold tools.

There are step by step Xbox 360 repair guides available (you can take a look at the #1 Xbox 360 repair guide at the end of this article by following the link) but the basic Xbox 360 repair involves:

1. Removing the cover and faceplate

2. Taking the motherboard and heat sink out

3. Creating space between heat sink and motherboard (using washers)

4. Cleaning the GPU (graphics processing unit)

Now you may be curious as to where Xbox 360 red lights come from and the simple answer is heat. As the Xbox 360 heats up, the motherboard vibrates. These vibrations loosen the GPU and once it comes loose you have the Xbox 360 ring of death. This is why the red light's won't just go away if you leave it.

While you need to keep your Xbox 360 in a well ventilated area at all times (to avoid overheating), you should know that the Xbox 360 red lights are not really your fault. Microsoft made a mistake, which they admitted to publicly in July 2007. They had made a major design flaw which could cause the system to "fail" (i.e. there is a good chance you will experience the Xbox 360 ring of death at some point, even from 'normal' use).

What is this design flaw?

Well, Xbox 360 red lights occur, as you know, when the motherboard overheats and the GPU comes loose. Microsoft had made a decision during the development of the Xbox 360 to shrink the heat sink to make room for the DVD drive. The problem is, the heat sink is the cooling unit which is supposed to keep the motherboard cool, and since they shrunk it too much, a lot of people are getting red light errors.

I am too nervous, I don't think I can perform my own Xbox 360 repair. I don't think I can fix my Xbox 360 red lights!

This is a fair concern you have, and you may get very scared about the idea of taking your Xbox 360 apart. You may have even tried some sketchy repair methods (like wrapping your system in a towel, hitting it, or blowing air into it with a hair dryer), none of which are safe or work (at least permanently). Well, rest assured, Xbox 360 repair is not hard, in fact it's very simple and many people do it themselves (the Xbox 360 red ring of death is not an uncommon problem, about 1 million people are in the same boat as you).

If you are absolutely dead set on not fixing your Xbox 360 red lights, be aware it costs $140 and takes up to 6 weeks to send it into Microsoft. $140 is a lot to pay for a problem you may not even be responsible for.

The good news is that 94% of Xbox 360 ring of death systems don't need new parts, they just need a little tweak to get them up and running. Step by step Xbox 360 repair guides will show you everything you need to do and some (like the one at the end of this article) have videos which will literally show you every step you need to take.

Wrapping up what you now know about Xbox 360 red lights

You now know that Xbox 360 red lights are caused by overheating and once you experience Xbox 360 red lights you need to repair your system to make them go away. The main cause of overheating is the heat sink being made too small, and the Xbox 360 repair involves separating the heat sink and motherboard to allow the motherboard to cool off when it's on.

Xbox 360 repair is safe and easy to perform, and it can be accomplished with common household items. It takes less than an hour, and you avoid a 6 week wait and a $140 Xbox 360 repair bill by sending it into Microsoft.

Xbox 360 Three Red Light Error

Xbox 360 Three Red Light ErrorBy [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=DG_Scott]DG Scott
If you're looking for information on how to repair your Xbox 360 yourself, you've come to the right place.
Forum rumors are ripe on the internet that there has been a spike in Xbox 360 returns, both valid and not so much.
This has lead to an increase in the return time for repaired Xbox 360s. I've heard that the turnaround time for Xbox 360 repairs has skyrocketed to as long as eight weeks. Before the manufacturers were offering the extended 3 year warranty they were charging $140 for Xbox 360 Repairs.
They put out a story that to do Xbox 360 Repairs was something difficult, their way of controlling the masses I guess. Their reasoning was something along these lines...
If we convince people that Xbox 360 Repairs are beyond their own DIY ability then they'll all have to pay us to fix their consoles.
The truth of the matter though, is that the Xbox 360 Repairs you need can be done in the comfort of your own home. A couple of class action suits later and they brought out an extended 3 year warranty on all new Xbox 360s.
Unfortunately, the extended warranty doesn't extend to everybody. If you bought your Xbox 360 second hand, they won't fix it for you. They won't fix your xbox 360 if you have opened the xbox up. There are a lot of ways to void your warranty, choose your poison.
If your warranty isn't valid anymore, your best bet is to actually take your Xbox 360 Repairs into your own hands.
The Three-Red-Lights blog has a step by step guide on how to permanently fix your Xbox 360, no matter what the error.
It has high res videos for every step so you can see everything in action. A lot of people have done their own Xbox 360 Repairs and saved themselves a lot of grief.
If you're lazy and want a quick temporary fix, check out my blog post on the towel trick, but I'd really recommend doing it the right way for a permanent fix. [http://three-red-lights.blogspot.com/2008/01/towel-trick-how-to-fix-your-xbox-360.html]The Towel Trick

Xbox 360 Repair And What You Should Know

Xbox 360 Repair And What You Should KnowBy [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Iziah_Walker]Iziah Walker
The Xbox 360 was hailed as the answer to Sony's up and coming PS3, a machine that would take gaming to the next level and surpass the level of gaming that Sony's Ps2 had enjoyed. Backed by one of the most powerful companies in the world (Microsoft) it had everything going for it, the graphics were breath taking and the game play exceeded the expectations of even the most critical gamer. But with all things that are software and hardware based, there are possibilities that things may not go as planned. In the case of the Xbox 360, this all became to apparent after it released and a slew of sites around the internet began reporting cases of hardware failure that ultimately meant an Xbox 360 repair was needed.
One of the main causes of the Xbox's problems was overheating. Due to the nonstop game play that these consoles were experiencing they began to overheat which meant the Xbox required an Xbox 360 repair. Poor ventilation was another reason that some of these consoles were experiencing hardware failures. If you do experience a problem with your Xbox then the first step you will want to take is to check to see if you are under warranty. If you are one of the lucky ones that still do have a warranty then that's great, you can either choose to have a replacement console or and Xbox 360 Repair. Make sure however that if your Xbox is still under warranty you should not try and open the console at any costs as this will in fact void your warranty and you will not be able to get a free Xbox 360 repair.
However if on the other hand you have had your Xbox 360 for a while and it no longer is under warranty you may want to try and fix the console yourself or you can choose to send it to a Xbox 360 repair service center where they can fix it for you at a cost that is likely to be in excess of $100. In addition you will have to wait a few weeks before they can actually repair it and send it back to you.
As we mention previously you may want to try an Xbox 360 repair yourself. There are many guides that are now available on the internet that can take you step by step through the repair process. I recommend that if you do purchase one of these guides that you make sure they offer video instructions as well as just the process of taking apart the Xbox 360 can be quite daunting itself but when you are actually watching somebody do it you can follow along which makes the whole process easier. There are currently several websites that offer eBook and detailed video instructions of Xbox disassembly, the Xbox repair itself and of course the Xbox reassembly so you should exercise due diligence when choosing which product to purchase. The Xbox 360 repair itself (when heat related) is quite simple and can often be done in less than an hour.
